Robert Sedlock, Director of Technical Training & Development at Natoli Scientific, taught a module on tablet compaction for a short course at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. The course, Tablets & Capsules Hands-On Short Course, took place October 15-19, 2018.
Robert’s lecture taught course participants about powder compression, tablet press operation, test methods for formulation development, and compaction simulators. About 60% of the course’s attendees were FDA scientists and reviewers with the remaining attendees being from the pharmaceutical industry.
The Tablets & Capsules Hands-On Short Course provided an overview of the manufacturing of multiparticulate beads, capsules, and tablets. Students learned about raw material assessment and formulation development, the key unit operations of tablet and capsule manufacturing, all the way to end-product testing and quality control using PAT methods. Going through the entire manufacturing process from start to finish in a systematic way gave students a comprehensive understanding of tablet and capsule manufacturing.
